In particular, young children and schoolchildren who may share hats, pillows, or combs are prone to lice infestations.

Over-the-Counter Medications: Some people would rather go to their local pharmacy and purchase over-the-counter medications. Like all chemicals, care must be taken to keep these out of the eyes and limit skin contact. Read all precautions carefully before use.

Coconut Oil: Apply virgin coconut oil to the hair and scalp lightly, then use a lice comb to go through the hair. Rinse of the comb repeatedly during the process. Wash the hair with ordinary shampoo then apply the coconut oil again and leave it in overnight. After this the hair must be combed again to remove any adult lice or eggs that may have been left behind.

In the event that a "frontline attack" doesn't work for head lice treatment, it is time to bring in the "special forces" -- namely, a dermatologist. Many specific medications are available for lice removal, and a dermatologist will study a person's condition to determine which treatment will work best.

And finally, try to remember that anyone can get head lice. It's not an indication that your family has poor hygiene, or that they aren't practicing a healthy lifestyle. Lice spread quickly and easily and need to be totally eradicated or they will return and you will have to battle them again.

Apart from olive oil, other natural head lice treatments include the use of margarine, petroleum jelly, tea tree oil and mayonnaise. There are others as well. Some people on an effort to go natural become quite desperate and opt for kerosene and even gasoline.
